Braille. History, interesting facts and digital typeface

People who have lost their vision at birth or during their lives automatically fall into the category of people with disabilities. It was for such people that in 1819 a raised, dotty font was developed, which allows information to be read from a surface by touch. You can find braille signs on our website.

The author of the typeface is Louis Braille, a French typhlo-pedagogue who lost his sight at the age of three. Little Louis was injured by a sharp object in his father's workshop, and became completely blind within a few years as a result of an inflammatory process. Louis has spent his entire life teaching and adapting educational systems for people with disabilities.

Louis Braille developed his famous script at the age of 15. He was inspired by the then already existing "night alphabet", which was used by artillerymen in the military. Soldiers made holes in cardboard in a certain order in order to transmit coordinate information at night.

Braille was a talented musician and taught his charges not only science, but also music. Based on his font, he also created a font for recording sounds on a sheet of music, again for blind people.

Thousands of books all over the world have been printed in Braille. This man did not just create another typeface, he discovered a way to get information for millions of people with disabilities.

Today Braille is used not only on paper, but also electronically.
